I am grateful to have spent the past week working to share the voice and story of Swinomish elder Larry Campbell. Larry is infectiously passionate about the work of preserving the lifeways of his community and rethinking our idea of health. During our conversation, Larry described his manner of speech as “time release teachings.” It is his intention that his words warrant reflection. This has certainly been my experience, and I hope his enthusiasm and spirit comes across to the audience of this project as well. I deeply appreciated the time and conversation Larry and I shared, and am only sorry I couldn’t include more of his perspective in the final piece.

Working with the Next Generation Radio team has been an instructive experience. Putting together a full package like this with all of this focused support is quite a privilege. Through numerous daily unforeseen setbacks and roadblocks, every member of the team was consistently thoroughly helpful. I want to extend special thanks to Rob and Arvid at KUOW in Seattle for their generous assistance with equipment this past week.

I found this week that interviewing for written reporting and interviewing for audio production are related but finely different skills. I really enjoyed editing the interview together and was glad for the guidance I received there. My greatest revelation to come out of this workshop has been that I find more value in directly sharing the voice of a subject than I do in adding too much of my own written contextualization on top of it.
